Jailbroken 13-year-old Kindle Paperwhite becomes a desk assistant
A Kindle owner jailbroke a 2013 Paperwhite to run to-do lists, app shortcuts and a Pomodoro timer as a desk assistant, with source code promised on GitHub.
The project was shown off by Reddit user Witespace in a post that included a demo video, and was reported by TechRadar, which cited XDA Developers as having spotted it first. The device stands upright beside the owner's laptop, and the software turns the e-reader into three tools at once: a to-do list manager, a Stream Deck-style app launcher and a Pomodoro timer.
"It stands sideways on my desk next to my laptop, and it's honestly become one of my favourite things on there," the Redditor wrote beneath the video. "Just need a proper stand for it now instead of leaning it against something."
Completed to-do items slide off the screen automatically. A calendar sync lets the Kindle issue an alert five minutes before any scheduled meeting, and the screen carries a button for joining that call with a single tap. The build also includes a weather app, a dark mode and a screensaver clock, and the custom software can disable the screensaver altogether so the display stays on indefinitely, with the user recharging the battery as needed.
One of the more unusual parts of the setup is its connection to two computers. The Kindle syncs with a MacBook and a PC through a Cloudflare web account, and can switch between the two machines either automatically or by a manual button press.
More features are planned. The developer has said work is under way on shortcuts that link to specific Spotify playlists and Slack channels, and on the ability to control lights. The source code is also to be released on GitHub, which would allow other owners of old Kindles to install the same software on their own devices. No release date for the code was given.
Reaction on Reddit was positive, with commenters describing the project as "great", "cool" and "awesome", according to TechRadar. The hack appeared days after Amazon introduced new Kindle models for 2026.
