Jailbroken PS5 Adds Physical PS2 Discs, PS3 Games, Nintendo Emulation and Windows 7

A wave of homebrew updates has let jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles boot physical PS2 DVDs, run PS3 titles, merge Wii U, 3DS and DS emulation into one interface, and even load Windows 7, according to Android Authority.

The most substantial release is PS5SX2 version 2.1.0, which introduces the first direct physical disc-booting workflow for the homebrew scene. The PCSX2-based emulator can boot original physical PS2 DVDs straight from the PS5 home screen, removing the step of first dumping ISO files to storage. The feature relies on a combination of ShadowMount Plus and a companion helper payload, moving the jailbroken console closer to the native backwards compatibility that Sony never shipped. The release follows an earlier PS5SX2 update that brought PlayStation 2 emulation to the console.

Separately, proof-of-concept footage from a project called RPS5S3 shows PlayStation 3 games running on the PS5. The footage was presented as a demonstration rather than a finished product, and no release date or performance details were given.

On the Nintendo side, an update to PS5CEMU-HAR unifies Wii U, 3DS and DS emulation under a single interface. Other Switch emulators received updates that developers say improve performance in demanding games. The Switch work builds on the earlier ProsperoEden project, which took on Nintendo Switch titles on the same hardware.

Developers also demonstrated booting and running Windows 7 on the PS5. No practical use was offered for the setup beyond the demonstration itself.

Taken together, the updates cover four different console generations and two Nintendo handheld lines, plus a desktop operating system, all running on one piece of Sony hardware. The activity is confined to jailbroken machines, and the article did not say whether any of the projects have been tested outside the developers' own demonstrations or how stable the emulators are in extended play. Sony has not commented on the releases, and the company has not offered an official emulation or backwards-compatibility path for PS2 or PS3 discs on the PS5.

【Editor's Summary】A series of homebrew updates has expanded what a jailbroken PlayStation 5 can run, adding direct playback of physical PS2 DVDs, a PlayStation 3 proof-of-concept, unified Wii U, 3DS and DS emulation, improved Switch emulator performance and a Windows 7 demonstration. The projects remain unofficial and require a jailbroken console, and Sony has not responded to the releases or provided comparable backwards compatibility of its own.
