JustWatch Launches JustWatch TV, Moving From Streaming Guide to Streamer
JustWatch, whose guide is used by 50 million people, launched JustWatch TV on Tuesday with 30 content partners, free and paid tiers, and a rental store in 12 markets.
The JustWatch Group, the media and entertainment company behind the guide, first announced plans to enter streaming last month. It said then that Paramount, New Regency, Fremantle, Bleecker Street, and Vortex Media were on board. It has since announced additional content partners, including Cineverse in the United States, LEONINE Studios in Germany, SND in France, and Altitude in the United Kingdom.
JustWatch's free tier offers a selection of ad-supported titles. JustWatch TV Plus, the ad-free version, offers more than 300 ad-free titles in the United States and features such as advanced filters and the option to hide previously seen or disliked titles in the guide. A movie rental store is initially available in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, with more markets to follow.
JustWatch TV Plus is priced at $3.99 per month or $49.99 for a lifetime subscription. Paid subscribers can take 10% off hundreds of rentals in the JustWatch TV Store, the company said. The ad-supported tier competes with free streamers such as Tubi and Plex, while the Plus tier competes with low-cost services such as Roku's $2.99-per-month ad-free service, Howdy. The report said JustWatch's content lineup focuses on older movies and shows and more indie content, like most low-cost services. Users will also be able to request titles they want to see to help shape what comes to the service, according to the report.
JustWatch has been known for its online guide to movies and TV for 12 years. The guide, available in 140 markets, provides streaming options for more than 500,000 movies and shows across more than 1,500 service providers worldwide. Its "where to watch" information and streaming chart data also power about 1,400 partner websites and apps. Studios, distributors, streamers, and agencies use the data to target campaigns on social media platforms including Meta, YouTube, and TikTok. The company believes running its own service will create a larger opportunity to grow its audience data and insights.
