KDE Plasma 6.8 is now available, bringing Wayland and multi-GPU improvements as the KDE project marks its 30th anniversary. A new documentary is available to stream for free on YouTube.

The release includes vRAM usage optimizations, dwell clicker support on Wayland, Wayland commit-timing protocol support for KWin, improvements for the Union theme engine, better remote desktop support, multi-GPU handling improvements, a new kscreenctl tool, server-side drop shadow support, multi-monitor improvements, and other polishing throughout. The Slashdot item was attributed to an anonymous reader quoting Phoronix.

According to the report, Plasma 6.8 has received considerable polishing and fine tuning, especially from the Wayland angle. The release also brings improvements across several areas of the desktop environment, including graphics handling, accessibility features, theme engine behavior, remote desktop use, and multi-monitor setups.

Alongside the release, a new film titled The KDE Documentary is available. The report says the film “tells the story of the pioneering open source community that gave computer users a free and open alternative to proprietary desktops like Windows.” The documentary can be streamed for free on YouTube.
