KEPCO Says Personal Data of About 24,000 Employees Leaked

Korea Electric Power Corp. said the personal information of about 24,000 employees was exposed on an external website, including names, job titles and phone numbers, but not resident registration numbers or customer data.

The state-run utility said in a statement that it learned of the exposure at around 3:59 p.m. Thursday. "We became aware that the personal information of employees was exposed on an external web site at around 3:59 p.m. Thursday," the company said.

The leaked data includes employees' names, job positions and telephone numbers, according to KEPCO. The company said sensitive information such as resident registration numbers was not included. Customer information, which KEPCO stores in a separate system, was not compromised.

KEPCO said it has notified the employees affected and completed deleting the leaked information at around midnight Friday. A company official said KEPCO is still verifying the exact cause of the incident, and that the leak appears to be unrelated to the artificial intelligence-related hacking attacks that hit financial firms.

The disclosure follows a series of recent breaches at major South Korean financial companies, including Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank and Shinhan Bank, which suffered back-to-back leaks of customer information in hacking attacks.
