Kodak PixPro AZ653 Named Budget Bridge Camera to Beat in TechRadar Review

TechRadar's review names Kodak PixPro AZ653 the budget bridge camera to beat, citing 65x zoom, DSLR-like handling and a $449 price.

According to TechRadar, bridge cameras have received little attention in recent years as affordable mirrorless options improved. The AZ653 revives the category's main appeal with a 24-1560mm equivalent lens that covers subjects from street scenes to distant wildlife.

Priced at $449 in the US, £349 in the UK and AU$750.99 in Australia, the camera is cheaper than assembling a mirrorless setup with a super-telephoto lens. TechRadar notes that a Canon EOS R100 paired with an RF800mm f/11 lens costs about $1,228 / £1,359 / AU$2,000. The Sony RX10 V, a premium bridge camera launched this year, is roughly seven times more expensive and has a shorter zoom range.

Despite a tiny 1/2.3-inch 20-megapixel sensor, the review describes image quality as respectable, with sharp optics and an effective stabilizer in good light. However, extreme color noise can appear, and the sensor limits low-light performance.

The autofocus is smooth but not the fastest in its price bracket, and may not track quickly moving animals. Still, for slower subjects at a distance, the large zoom makes it a budget-friendly safari option.

Handling is decidedly DSLR-like, with logical controls and a comfortable grip. A manual control ring on the lens adds a premium feel. The 3-inch LCD screen, however, is poor quality.

The AZ653 will not replace a mirrorless camera for image quality, but it performs well for its price. TechRadar's reviewer says it is fun to use and easy on the shoulder and wallet.
