Lambda to Raise Up to $4B at $14.5B Valuation Ahead of Planned 2027 IPO

AI cloud provider Lambda is raising up to $4B at a $14.5B pre-money valuation, likely its last private round before a planned 2027 IPO.

A letter to investors reviewed by the Journal shows Lambda's backlog grew from $15 billion in June to $50 billion in September. Much of that increase traces to a single customer: the AI lab Anthropic committed $35 billion under a deal signed with Lambda in late August. That concentration means the company's valuation, which has climbed sharply since its 2025 funding round, leans heavily on Anthropic's ability to keep paying.

GPU capacity remains scarce enough that investors are still willing to bet on providers holding large contracts with major AI labs. Meeting demand is the harder problem. Data center buildouts are largely funded by debt, and Lambda raised an additional $1 billion last week. Lenders, for their part, have become more selective about whom they lend to and under what circumstances.

Raising now gives Lambda more capital before the scrutiny of public markets arrives and sets a reference point for its IPO pricing. The company had reportedly been expected to debut this year but pushed the listing back amid market uncertainty.

If it does list, Lambda would join other Nvidia-backed neoclouds such as CoreWeave and Nebius, whose data center construction now depends on the health of their share prices. British neocloud Nscale filed for an IPO last month and is expected to begin trading soon.

Lambda, Coatue and Blackstone did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Editor's Summary

Lambda is seeking up to $4 billion at a $14.5 billion pre-money valuation in a round led by Coatue Management and Blackstone, ahead of a planned 2027 listing. Its backlog rose from $15 billion in June to $50 billion in September, with $35 billion of that tied to a single Anthropic contract signed in late August, leaving the valuation exposed to one customer's continued spending. The private raise gives Lambda capital before public-market scrutiny and helps set expectations for its IPO pricing alongside Nvidia-backed peers such as CoreWeave and Nebius.
