Laptop Battery Guide: How Long Should a Full Charge Last?
Engadget explains how to gauge laptop battery life and offers tips to maximize performance and longevity.
For premium thin-and-light Ultrabooks, users can expect eight to 12 hours (or up to 15 under ideal conditions), while standard laptops generally manage six to 10 hours. Budget models last about four to seven hours, and gaming laptops drain the quickest, with only two to four hours per charge.
The type of charger also matters; aftermarket chargers may not deliver precise voltage, potentially stressing the battery. To maximize runtime, Engadget recommends turning down screen brightness, closing background apps, lowering refresh rate, and using power-saving modes, though demanding tasks may require switching out of that mode.
Demanding activities like gaming, video editing, video streaming, and 3D rendering drain power quickly, so planning ahead with a power bank or access to an outlet is wise. Temperature plays a role: keeping the laptop between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal, while heat above 95°F can permanently damage lithium-ion batteries, and cold below 32°F causes temporary inefficiency.
Engadget also advises avoiding fully draining the battery repeatedly and not keeping it plugged in for extended periods once fully charged. It suggests following the 40-80 rule — starting charging at 40% and stopping at 80% — though not strictly necessary.
