Last 4:3 ThinkPad T61p Revisited: Rare Model Highlights Screen Transition and 'Graphics Gate'
A new retrospective on the rare 4:3 ThinkPad T61p details its place as the final 4:3 T-series model, its specs, and the NVIDIA 'graphics gate' issue.
The retrospective traces the timeline of screen ratio changes. While 4:3 was once standard, consumer notebooks began shifting to 16:10 around 2007. That April, 4:3 screens were no longer mainstream: 85.3% of notebooks on the market were wide-screen, and over 70% of consumers chose them. Even ThinkPad, a staunch 4:3 supporter, started offering 16:10 versions with the T60, first on the 15.4-inch model. When the T61 arrived in May 2007, it was available in both ratios, but the wide-screen 16:10 versions were the primary push, for both the 14.1-inch and 15.4-inch models. The T61p, positioned as a mobile workstation, was more commonly found with a 15.4-inch 16:10 display, making the 14.1-inch 4:3 unit rare, especially outside of enterprise CTO orders.
According to the official Hardware Maintenance Manual, the 14.1-inch 4:3 T61 and T61p were grouped together, but 4:3 T61p units were far fewer than their standard T61 counterparts. The physical differences between the two screen ratios were notable. The 4:3 unit measured roughly 333 x 238 x 28-32 mm and weighed 2.4-2.5 kg, while the 16:10 15.4-inch model was larger and heavier at 358 x 255 x 30 mm and 2.7-2.8 kg. The 4:3 version did not have speaker openings above the keyboard; its speakers were located on the bottom.
The author's specific 4:3 T61p was equipped with a 14.1-inch 1400x1050 display, an Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 at 2.2 GHz, an NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M with 128 MB VRAM, 1 GB of DDR2 RAM (upgradeable to 4 GB), and a 160 GB 5400-RPM Hitachi hard drive. Notably, most 4:3 T61p units used the 128 MB FX 570M, while 16:10 15.4-inch versions often carried 256 MB. Some models, such as the 6457RU1, used the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M, though this was more common in the standard T61.
Both the FX 570M and NVS 140M relied on NVIDIA's G84/G86 GPU cores, which were plagued by a notorious defect. The packaging material had a thermal expansion coefficient that did not match the GPU die, causing solder joints to crack under repeated heat cycles. Affected laptops could show no display with beep codes, present artifacts, screen glitches, or become unstable. NVIDIA acknowledged the issue and spent hundreds of millions of dollars, while PC makers updated BIOSes to run fans at full speed, but the only real fix was a redesigned chip in late 2008.
The author's T61p shipped with Windows Vista, but the test used Lenovo's OEM Windows XP Professional SP3, which was also offered for the T61 series. Installation took about half an hour. The author upgraded the system to 2 GB of RAM in dual channel and replaced the 160 GB hard drive with a 500 GB 7200-RPM drive, making XP run smoothly. Software tested included Office 2007, ACDSee, and older browsers like 360 Speed 13.5 and Firefox 52.9.0 ESR. Multimedia was handled by Windows Media Player, thousand-stay, or Winamp. The 4:3 aspect ratio proved advantageous for Office documents and classic games from the early 2000s, which natively supported 4:3 without cropping.
Games installed included Plants vs. Zombies, SimCity 3000, and RollerCoaster Tycoon, all of which played fine. The author avoided demanding 3D software like 3ds Max to protect the aging and potentially unstable GPU. To prolong the system's life, the unit was disassembled, cleaned, and re-pasted.
The retrospective concludes that this 4:3 T61p is one of the last ThinkPad T-series machines with a traditional aspect ratio, carrying a unique place in laptop history. Its connection to the NVIDIA graphics issue adds another layer of significance for collectors and enthusiasts.
