Lexar Muse portable SSD is world's thinnest at 3.8mm, but requires proprietary cable

Lexar announced the Muse ultraslim portable SSD at IFA 2026, claiming it's the world's thinnest at 3.8mm. It offers up to 1TB storage and fast speeds for 4K video, but needs a magnetic SnapLink cable instead of USB-C.

According to Lexar, the slim design is achieved through high-density NAND stacking and a custom ultra-thin PCB architecture, while the unibody metal enclosure is formed from a single piece of metal to minimize gaps and seams. The drive comes in 512GB and 1TB capacities with read speeds up to 1,050MB/s and write speeds up to 1,000MB/s, which the company says is fast enough for recording 4K Apple ProRes video at up to 120fps on a compatible iPhone.

Unlike most portable SSDs, the Muse has no standard USB-C port. Instead, it relies on a proprietary SnapLink cable that magnetically attaches to a pogo-pin connector on the side of the drive. Lexar does not specify the strength of the magnets, and TechRadar notes that the magnetic connection might not be the most robust. The cable approach also carries an increased risk of being accidentally knocked off during file transfers, according to The Verge.

The drive ships with a magnetic sleeve for attaching it to the back of a MagSafe iPhone. The sleeve can also work with Android phones that have magnet cases or built-in magnets, such as the Pixel 11 range, Android Authority reports. Lexar appears to be promoting use of the Muse for on-the-go storage with smartphones that support high-quality video capture, including ProRes on iPhones and LOG or APV formats on some Android devices.

The Muse is expected to launch later this year, but pricing has not been announced.
