LG Smart TVs Found Logging Data While Offline or on Standby

LG smart TVs keep logging data even offline or on standby, investigation says.

The investigation, which used retail LG OLED televisions, captured network traffic showing the TVs repeatedly scanning local Wi-Fi networks for nearby hardware such as phones and smartwatches. The packet captures also showed location data and details about nearby Wi-Fi networks being logged and sent to LG Ad Solutions, according to the report. The researchers said the TVs could record audio through their built-in microphones while in standby. That recording continued after a TV was disconnected from the internet, with audio files stored offline and uploaded once a connection was restored.

The report also examined Automatic Content Recognition, or ACR, technology that uses audio and video samples to determine what is being watched. On LG's TVs, the system could identify content from apps on the smart interface as well as video sent through HDMI and other ports. ACR is not exclusive to LG; a separate video from RTINGS says almost every smart TV manufacturer uses the technology to track viewing.

The Verge noted that this is not LG's first brush with Gamers Nexus. In July, the channel reported that some LG monitors automatically installed an app that collected device data and served pop-up ads for LG's own apps and McAfee antivirus. Following the public pressure from that report, Microsoft intervened and LG disabled the pop-up ads.
