Linus Torvalds Says AI 'Enormously Helped' Debug Intel Xe Graphics Driver Bug

Linus Torvalds says AI enormously helped him debug a stubborn Intel graphics driver bug, after 24 patches and 18 boots.

In a commit message cited by the report, Torvalds called the AI "my tireless helper," but noted that the AI "several times stated flat out that this was impossible and unsolvable and that we should just write a report about it." He added: "I suspect those things have been trained by people who may not be quite as stubborn as I am."

Phoronix, cited by Slashdot, said the patch stops the Xe kernel driver from handing out the flat Compute Command Streamer (CCS) storage as usable vRAM. On a Battlemage G21 graphics card, Torvalds encountered a mismatch between usable memory and the rest, which caused the GDM display manager to restart endlessly. The fix has been merged into Linux 7.3 Git and is marked for back-porting to the stable kernel branches.

According to Slashdot, Torvalds said the AI's help was "enormous" in this case, reaffirming his view of AI as a useful debugging tool.
