Liquid-Cooled PCs: Are They Worth the Premium Over Air Coolers?
An Engadget report explores whether liquid-cooled PCs justify their higher cost, detailing how they work, their performance benefits, and downsides compared to air coolers.
Liquid and air coolers both move heat away from the CPU, but they use different methods. Air coolers rely on a heatsink and heat pipes, while liquid systems use coolant circulated through a water block, pump, tubing, and a radiator. Liquid coolers are generally more complex and aimed at high-end gaming PCs, where 4K output at console-beating frame rates puts heavy load on the CPU. Air coolers, though less suitable for top-tier gaming processors, are ideal for budget or mid-range builds where the CPU is not under constant heavy load.
In a typical AIO liquid cooler, thermal paste transfers heat from the CPU to a copper plate in the water block, which passes it to the liquid. A pump then moves the heated liquid to a radiator, usually mounted above the motherboard, where fans dissipate the heat and send the cooled liquid back to the water block. Custom loop systems differ by allowing users to choose every component—including the water block, radiator, tubing, fans, and reservoir—and can be configured to cool the GPU as well.
The Engadget piece recommends liquid cooling for owners of high-end CPUs like the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The author, who has used that processor with an NZXT Kraken 360 AIO cooler, notes that the added thermal headroom enables 4K/120FPS gaming without overheating, while top-tier liquid coolers can run quietly and look sharper than fan-based alternatives. However, cheaper liquid coolers can be noisy, and larger 280mm or 360mm radiators dissipate substantially more heat, making them the go-to choice for cutting-edge builds.
Still, liquid cooling has downsides. High-end models can cost upwards of $200, far more than the best air coolers. AIO models are trickier to install, requiring the radiator to be secured inside the case, and their pumps wear over time, while air coolers need little maintenance after installation. There is also a small risk of leakage, which could damage other PC components.
For budget or mid-range PCs, air coolers remain the most practical option due to their simplicity and lower cost. The choice ultimately depends on the user's performance needs and willingness to accept higher expense and maintenance requirements for a more powerful and visually striking cooling solution.
