M6 MacBook Pro expected this fall with dual Neural Engine and 12-core CPU

Apple is expected to launch a 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro this fall with a dual 16-core Neural Engine, a 12-core CPU and GPU, and 2nm efficiency gains for better battery life.

The M6 chip introduces a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, replacing the standard 16-core Neural Engine used in the M5 and earlier chips. Apple says the dual-engine setup provides up to twice the peak compute of previous generations, and system frameworks can automatically use both engines simultaneously for faster on-device AI workflows.

The base M6 chip also gains a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, up from 10 cores each on the M5. According to 9to5Mac, the CPU is the first base Apple chip to combine three core types: two super cores for single-threaded workloads, four performance cores for multithreaded tasks, and six efficiency cores for background work. Such Pro-level CPU capabilities previously appeared only in M5 Pro, M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips.

The M6 is built on a 2nm process, which Apple describes as a major leap in performance and power efficiency. The only product currently using the M6 is the new Mac mini, which does not run on a battery, and 9to5Mac says the improved efficiency is likely to enable longer battery life in the M6 MacBook Pro.
