MacBook Neo Is Apple's Only Pink MacBook as Engadget Questions Color Gap

Engadget reports that Apple's MacBook Neo, in a shade called Blush, is the only pink MacBook available, while higher-end laptops remain silver, space black or muted. The budget model is aimed at casual users and note-taking, and Engadget asks why Apple has not brought pink to more laptops.

The limited availability reflects a broader shift in Apple's laptop lineup. Engadget reported that after Apple quietly retired Rose Gold across all laptops, the company moved away from offering higher-end models in vibrant shades. A faint blue MacBook Air is an option, Engadget said, but buyers who want a MacBook Pro are limited to traditional Silver and Space Black. Engadget asked why Apple cannot offer both function and a second pink MacBook.

The report placed Apple's laptop colors against the wider device market, where bold colors have been rising, especially in smartphones. It cited Google's Pixel lineup, saying many Pixel devices have received pink treatments and the new 11 is releasing in a striking hot pink called Hibiscus, reminiscent of older Motorola Razr phones. The reimagined foldable Razr is available in Hot Pink as an homage to the original design, Engadget said.

Engadget said Apple does use playful colors on other products. Two separate pink shades appear on the Phone 16 and 17e, with the 17e's pink more muted than the 16's bolder, brighter look, according to the report. The latest base-level iPad with A16 comes in a bold pink that Engadget said is rivaled only by the same model's vibrant yellow variant, and the M4 iMac is offered in several eye-grabbing colors, including pink.

Move up to products such as the iPad Pro or MacBook Pro, and the color choices become subtle and muted at best, alongside the usual grays and silvers, Engadget reported. The report described Rose Gold as a middle ground that brought color to iPhones throughout the mid-2010s, to MacBook Airs discontinued in 2019, and to Apple Watches, a color that also ended this year. Apple Watch Series 11 was the last showcase of Rose Gold, Engadget said, and with Series 12 arriving this year, even that option is gone. The most colorful option in the new lineup is Night Blue, which Engadget noted is quite dark.

Recent Pro iPhones have offered a small amount of hope for more color, according to Engadget. The 17 Pro came in a highly saturated orange, while the 18 Pro has rich burgundy and subtle glacier blue options. With a rumored reimagining of the MacBook Pro range on the horizon, Engadget said it is time for Apple to bring more color to its laptops as well.
