macOS 27.2 Beta Adds Touch Gesture Code as Apple Prepares First Touchscreen MacBook Pro

Apple's macOS 27.2 beta 3 adds touch gesture recognizers to Photos, Notes, Safari and Quick Look, the latest sign the company is preparing its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, expected as soon as this month.

The beta contains what MacRumors described as "gesture recognition tools" in four stock apps, according to strings found by Aaron Perris of MacRumors. Photos adds a "PXGTouchDwellGestureRecognizer," Notes adds an "ICTouchPressGestureRecognizer," Safari adds a touch sentinel recognizer, and Quick Look adds a dragTouch feature. The same beta also introduces a new long-press animation for the Dock.

Those additions follow a series of touch-related changes Apple has made across macOS 27. The release added pull-to-refresh support for the first time, and it brought touch input to Sidecar, the feature that lets an iPad be used as a secondary display for a Mac.

Bloomberg has also reported on Apple's work to optimize macOS for the forthcoming touchscreen MacBook Pro. According to that reporting, tapping a button or control prompts macOS to dynamically display relevant touch options, and tapping the menu bar automatically enlarges controls to make them easier to hit.

In addition to a touchscreen, the new MacBook Pro will reportedly carry an OLED display and be "significantly lighter" than the current models. Apple is expected to introduce the machine as soon as this month, though Bloomberg has cautioned that the launch could slip to November. The product's name has not been confirmed, and it may be positioned as a MacBook Ultra rather than a MacBook Pro.

A touchscreen would be a first for the Mac line, which has relied on trackpad and keyboard input since its introduction. The gesture code found in the beta points to system-level support rather than a single feature tied to one app, covering photo editing, note taking, browsing and file preview.
