macOS 27 Golden Gate Fixes HDR and Scaled Resolution Conflict for Third-Party Displays
macOS 27 fixes a Tahoe limitation that blocked HDR and scaled resolutions together on third-party displays, 9to5Mac reports.
According to 9to5Mac, a third-party HDR10-capable display connected to a Mac running Tahoe shows a High Dynamic Range toggle in Settings, Displays. When that toggle is on, HDR content can be viewed. In the publication's test with a Dell 32-inch UltraSharp U3226Q, however, the toggle was available only when the 4K display was set to 1920 x 1080, which is exactly 2x the pixel-doubled resolution of the panel's native 3840 x 2160.
That resolution makes content appear too large on a 4K display and greatly reduces the available screen area, the report said. Selecting a scaled resolution such as 2560 x 1440, the default setting for Apple's 5K Studio Display, disabled HDR. The toggle disappeared, and macOS automatically switched back to Standard Dynamic Range. Users therefore had to choose between HDR and their preferred scaled resolution.
With macOS 27 Golden Gate, 9to5Mac found that a scaled resolution and HDR can be selected simultaneously. The publication said the option is native and does not involve third-party software. The test was performed on an M4 MacBook Pro. On an M1 Max MacBook Pro running macOS 27, the same two settings could not be selected at the same time, suggesting that hardware requirements also apply.
The publication also reported that macOS 27 offers broader native HDR support across the operating system. It described brighter spectral highlights and cursors and a more contrasty appearance compared with macOS Tahoe, benefits that apply to users of Apple Studio Display XDR, Pro Display XDR, and third-party OLED displays.
9to5Mac's writer said he was testing Dell's 32-inch UltraSharp U3226Q and had positive early impressions. He called the OLED panel's picture quality impressive, especially with HDR enabled in macOS, and said a full hands-on review would appear on the publication's YouTube channel.
