Makera Z1 Desktop CNC Aims to Bring Machining to Beginners, Debuts at IFA 2026

Makera has been working on accessible desktop CNCs since 2019, first with the Carvera and later the Carvera Air. The Z1 is the next step. Unlike a 3D printer that builds objects layer by layer, the Z1 starts with a solid block and carves away material to create the final shape. This enables products such as engraved metal jewelry, custom PCBs, and mechanical parts made from wood, plastic, or aluminum.

The Z1 uses an integrated gantry frame and a one-piece cast frame to reduce mechanical complexity and keep the machine stable during operation. It is compact enough to sit on a desk and weighs about 17kg, so it can be moved easily between a desk and a shelf. It has a 20 x 20 x 10cm cutting envelope, and the 150W spindle reaches speeds of up to 13,000 RPM.

The machine works with wood, plastic, acrylic, PCB, aluminum, brass, carbon fiber, and composites, covering more than 500 material types. It offers repeatability up to ±0.02mm. A quick tool changer allows bits to be swapped without recalibration, wired auto probing helps set up jobs, and an AeroDust collection system keeps debris contained. A built-in camera provides real-time monitoring of cuts. Buyers can also add an optional laser module and a fourth-axis module, the latter expanding the cutting envelope around a rotating piece by 8cm of diameter and 15cm of length.

Makera is also exhibiting software and community components alongside the Z1. Makera Studio is a free CAM program intended to generate toolpaths automatically and suggest the best approach for a job. Makerables is a platform where users share and download 3D models and toolpath files, and it includes AI tools for creating design files from scratch. The combined ecosystem is designed to help a user move from choosing a design to cutting it without prior CAD experience.

According to Android Authority, the Z1 is suited for prototyping, custom projects, and small structural parts in home workshops, classrooms, and small businesses that make a few parts rather than large volumes. It operates quietly in shared spaces, and an external dust collector can be connected for messier materials. The report did not list pricing or specific shipping dates.
