MapQuest Adds Layer Showing Flock and Other Surveillance Cameras
MapQuest now lets users toggle a map layer showing known outdoor surveillance cameras and license plate readers, including Flock cameras.
The layer displays Flock cameras as well as locations of cameras from Motorola Solutions (Vigilant), Genetec, Axis Communications, Axon, Leonardo (ELSAG), Neology, Rekor, PlateSmart, Ubicquia and Verkada. Users can toggle it on and off in the app.
MapQuest announced the update with a short video set to Rockwell's 'Somebody's Watching Me.' The mapping service has seen a recent surge in popularity after it refused to refer to Lake Ontario as Lake America, unlike Google Maps and Apple Maps. It also added Android Auto support and public transit directions.
The new layer may not make it easy for users to avoid cameras on their commute or other usual routes. According to Engadget, it may still help illustrate how pervasive the cameras are in a given area. That information could be useful for people who are trying to rid their neighborhoods of surveillance cameras.
