MapQuest Adds Surveillance Layer for ALPR Camera Locations

MapQuest has launched a toggleable Surveillance Layer showing locations of automated license plate readers and known outdoor cameras, including Flock Safety devices, Gizmodo reports.

AI News Feed · 2026-10-18 07:13

According to MapQuest, the layer identifies known outdoor cameras and plate readers from Motorola Solutions' Vigilant, Genetec, Axis Communications, Axon, Leonardo's ELSAG, Neology, Rekor, PlateSmart, Ubicquia, Verkada and other vendors. The company announced the feature after promising not to comply with the Trump administration's "Lake America" gimmick, Gizmodo reported.

MapQuest did not specify how it sources the data. The information appears similar to data collected by DeFlock, which maintains a user-submitted map of ALPR camera locations, and MapQuest may be sourcing information from DeFlock and the OpenStreetMap project. Engadget noted that MapQuest also recently added Android Auto support and public transit directions.
