MapQuest begins testing Android Auto support after its refusal to rename Lake Ontario pushed the app into top charts.

The same update adds crowdsourced incident-reporting for crashes, road closures and speed traps. According to Android Authority, early users on Reddit say the Android Auto rollout looks unfinished: the map is heavily zoomed out, responds slowly, and a “CarPlay” notification appeared on an Android device, indicating the code was adapted from the iOS app. MapQuest has supported Apple CarPlay for several years.

The testing follows MapQuest’s move to the top 10 free apps in both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store after it rejected renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its platform. Google Maps and Apple Maps complied with that change, according to Android Authority, making MapQuest’s decision stand out and helping drive downloads. Android Authority said the Android Auto test gives curious users who joined during the surge one fewer reason to abandon the app after the nostalgia fades.
