Mario Kart 64 now runs natively on iPhone with Metal rendering, 120 fps support
9to5Mac reports SpaghettiPad brings native Metal rendering to Mario Kart 64 on iPhone, offering 120 fps, HD textures and better performance than emulators.
9to5Mac's hands-on testing found that running Mario Kart 64 natively via SpaghettiPad offers several advantages over emulation through apps like Delta. The native version provides better performance overall and fewer glitches, with a notable example being Luigi Raceway's jumbotron, which runs at a significantly higher locked-in frame rate compared to the choppy emulated version. The app also enables additional settings not available through emulators.
To install SpaghettiPad, users first need to sideload SideStore using iLoader, then install LocalDevVPN from the App Store, and finally download the SpaghettiPad.ipa from GitHub. SideStore, an AltStore fork, signs and re-signs apps in the background to keep Apple's 7-day development period from expiring. However, as 9to5Mac notes, non-developer accounts are limited to 10 App IDs per week and three active apps at a time, with refreshes required every seven days.
Users must supply their own ROM file, as SpaghettiPad does not include one. The original report emphasizes that players should own a physical copy of Mario Kart 64 and dump the ROM themselves. The installation process also requires an Apple ID, though a developer account is not needed.
