Mario Kart 64 VR Mod Adds First-Person Racing, if You Can Stomach It
A new Mario Kart 64 VR mod projects players into first-person, head-tracked racing; the free mod is available now via GitHub.
The mod was created by developer RaYRoD TV, who has previously brought Banjo-Kazooie and Star Fox 64 to VR. It was spotted in a clip shared on X by BeardoBenjo on August 5. The video shows the Koopa Troopa Beach track from a first-person, head-tracked viewpoint, including the tunnel shortcut. Engadget describes the clip as fairly nauseating, with the view making it look like the player is zooming down the beach head-first rather than sitting in a kart. The game's simple visuals gain added charm in VR, according to the report.
The mod is based on an existing PC port of Mario Kart 64 called SpaghettiKart. It is available for free to download and install from GitHub, provided the player owns a Mario Kart 64 ROM or is willing to dump one from a physical cartridge. The mod also adds a VR options menu that lets players adjust stereo depth, eye height, and HUD placement.
Nintendo has shown little interest in VR outside of the Virtual Boy and a one-off Nintendo Labo kit. For N64 fans with a headset, the mod offers a new way to revisit the game, though Engadget advises not eating beforehand.
