Meetily Offers Free, Private Meeting Transcription and Summaries

Meetily is a free, open-source meeting assistant that transcribes and summarizes calls locally on Windows and macOS, protecting privacy and avoiding subscription fees.

Meeting assistant services typically charge $10 to $20 per month and require sending recordings to remote servers, which can be problematic for confidential projects. Meetily instead installs and runs models directly on the user's computer. The free community version can be downloaded from GitHub, while a Pro version costs $10 per month.

After installation, users grant Meetily access to both the microphone and system audio, allowing it to capture all sides of a conversation. This approach makes the tool compatible with any videoconferencing platform, including Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams. It can also transcribe in-person meetings if the laptop's microphone picks up everyone in the room.

During a meeting, transcription appears nearly in real time, and users can minimize the window to focus on the discussion. When the meeting ends, clicking stop produces a transcript, from which an AI summary can be generated. Users can give instructions on which points to emphasize. A beta feature allows importing previously recorded audio or video files for transcription and summarization.

The free version has limitations. Notably, it does not label speakers, making it difficult to know who said what. According to the report, no consistently reliable free and open-source tool with speaker identification was found. Alternatives include noScribe, a free tool that identifies speakers but only converts files rather than recording live; Anarlog, which offers a sleeker interface and more AI models but has a fiddlier setup; and Quill, which provides free local transcription but requires an account and includes upselling.

Despite these caveats, the availability of such free, local options represents a practical step for users seeking affordable meeting transcription without compromising privacy.
