Mercedes-AMG unveils 1,153hp GT SUV, its first ground-up full-size SUV
Mercedes-AMG reveals 2028 GT SUV, a 1,153hp electric full-size model with 800-volt charging, due in U.S. next summer.
The SUV will be offered in three trims: GT 53, GT 55 and the flagship GT 63. The top model produces 1,153hp from three axial flux motors, the same setup used in the AMG GT four-door coupe. The Verge reported that this output beats the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric with Launch Control.
Mercedes says the SUV’s 800-volt architecture supports charging up to 710kW on the 128kWh battery in the GT 63 and GT 55, and up to 600kW on the 106kWh battery in the GT 53. Drivers can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 12 minutes or add up to 450km, about 280 miles, of WLTP range in 10 minutes. The 128kWh versions have an estimated maximum range of 435 miles.
The battery uses F1-inspired technology with NCMA cathodes, silicon-containing anodes and cylindrical cells. A nonconductive oil flows directly around each cell for thermal management, which Mercedes says enables continuous high-power delivery and long battery life. The Verge noted that the 710kW charging speed could give Mercedes an edge over Porsche’s 320kW speeds.
Mercedes-AMG replaced traditional mechanical roll bars with a suspension that uses active hydraulic elements to reduce pitch and roll during acceleration, hard braking and cornering. It is combined with three-stage air springs and standard six-degree active rear-axle steering. The GT 63 SUV weighs 5,941 pounds, slightly lighter than the Lotus Eletre R at 6,007 pounds and the Lucid Gravity at 6,100 pounds, and nearly identical to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric at 5,960 pounds.
The SUV pipes recorded sounds from real AMG V8 and six-cylinder engines into the cabin rather than using synthetic EV tones, Mercedes says. The system simulates mechanical gear shifts through paddle controls, offers adjustable sound profiles and adds physical seat vibrations. The AMGFORCE Sport+ drive program is standard across all three trims.
Inside, a 14-inch display runs the MB.OS platform and offers AI agents from ChatGPT, Microsoft and Google. Mercedes’ own onboard AI system handles functions such as adjusting HVAC, changing drive modes and controlling lighting through voice commands. A Predictive Performance Manager uses track-mapping data to adjust electric motor output depending on topography, conserving battery energy on downhill or winding sections and making full power available on steep inclines and long straights, according to Mercedes.
Mercedes did not release official pricing. The Verge reported that pricing is expected closer to the vehicle’s official launch.
