Meta launches WhatsApp Business MCP server for AI agent setup

Meta launched a WhatsApp Business MCP server for AI agents to set up accounts and edit message templates.

TechRadar reported that the connection lets users set up and configure business messaging agentically instead of manually working through dashboards and other pages. Meta would prefer users to use Meta AI, but the new MCP server also means Claude, ChatGPT and their AI agents can handle the setup work, the report said.

Meta has acknowledged that onboarding to WhatsApp Business has become unnecessarily fragmented, with the Meta Developer Console, Business Manager and other dashboards all playing a role in setup, according to TechRadar. Under the new agentic sign-up process, an AI agent can create accounts, add and verify phone numbers, create and edit message templates and make API calls.

The report cited Zoë Lieberman, a product marketing manager at Meta, who described how the system works. 'You describe what you want; your agent handles the accounts, numbers, templates, and API calls,' Lieberman wrote. She also said, 'Before any tool runs, the server confirms you're an admin of the app, resolves the attached business, and verifies your Terms of Service are signed.'

TechRadar reported that the Meta Business Messaging MCP is currently rolling out gradually and is only discoverable on Claude, Codex and ChatGPT. Meta stressed that the current release is 'built for development and testing workflows' and is asking for feedback to monitor how effective it is, the report said. TechRadar added that Meta may continue to add new features, MCP options and supported agents as it seeks to make communication administration easier for business owners.
