Meta to Charge Facebook Pages for Extra Hyperlinks
NPR says Facebook pages get two free hyperlinks monthly; paid Meta One plans cost $49.99 or $499 for more.
Under the plans described by NPR News, the Meta One Advanced plan costs $49.99 a month and lets a page include eight hyperlinks in posts or reels. The Max plan costs $499 a month and allows an unlimited number of hyperlinks.
Ashley Gullen, who runs a game design company, posted on Mastodon, a decentralized social media platform, "Facebook achieving absurd new heights of enshittification," according to NPR News.
The move fits a pattern described by NPR News: social media sites do not like it when users leave. On Instagram, posting links is not the easiest; users need to include them in bios or through a special button on stories. NPR News also cited a Nieman Lab study finding that posting links hurts news publishers on X.
David Evans, managing director at consulting firm BRG, wrote in an explanation cited by NPR News: "Attention platforms use content to get consumers to spend time on their platform and sell marketers the ability to expose these consumers to messages." The report said attention is money for social media sites and that they want to keep users inside their walls.
