Meta to Let Users Build Games With AI on Phone and Browser for Horizon

Meta announced Horizon Create, a mobile app, and Horizon Studio, a browser tool, both using AI prompts to make 2D or 3D games. Games could be recommended and played on Facebook and Instagram. Both tools enter early access, with a waitlist.

Horizon Create is a mobile app, while Horizon Studio is a browser app that offers more granular controls. The tools are part of Meta's effort to attract creators to Horizon, which launched as a VR app and has recently pivoted to focus primarily on mobile. Meta has been putting AI into many of its products, and the company is now making AI a bigger part of Horizon as well.

Meta plans to give games published with Horizon Create and Horizon Studio significantly more reach. The company says those games can be recommended on Facebook and Instagram, where they will also be playable. Meta said someone scrolling through Instagram can tap a clip of a game and be in a multiplayer session within seconds, without needing to download an app or being redirected. The company said the game lives natively in the feeds where people already discover content and connect with friends. Meta said games that are engaging, stable, culturally relevant, and keep players coming back will get more reach.

In a blog post, Meta said both tools enable creators to turn any idea into a complete 2D or 3D mobile game, complete with progression systems, balanced difficulty, art direction, multiplayer, and more, then refine every element to their standards. The Verge wrote that it was skeptical that a large number of AI-generated games would be as engaging as handcrafted experiences, though it said the games made in Create and Studio appear to include video game elements.

The announcement comes as Roblox, a similar platform that is vastly more popular, is also making a significant push into AI-powered development. The Verge reported that Roblox has a feature in its mobile app that similarly allows users to generate games with a prompt. Roblox has 123 million daily active users. Horizon, by contrast, has never really taken off; The Verge reported in early 2022 that it hit 300,000 monthly users. Meta likely has a very long way to go to reach Roblox's scale.
