Meta’s Muse Reaches 10 Million U.S. Downloads in 40 Days, Sensor Tower Says

Sensor Tower: Meta’s Muse hit 10M U.S. downloads in 40 days and leads AI peers on retention despite privacy concerns.

The app had spent 12 consecutive days at the top of the U.S. App Store before slipping to second place, the report said. Sensor Tower did not name all 12 apps that reached the 10 million milestone in 40 days, but said nine were mobile games and that the most recent was Meta’s Threads in July 2023.

By comparison, ChatGPT, Grok and Claude reached 3.7 million, 500,000 and 200,000 U.S. downloads, respectively, in their first 40 days, according to Sensor Tower. The firm said ChatGPT drew about 15 million global downloads in its first 40 days, with the U.S., Japan, Brazil and Germany accounting for 25%, 9%, 6% and 5% of that total. ChatGPT’s U.S. downloads fell 25% in the past 30 days compared with the prior 30-day period, the report said. ChatGPT is currently the fourth most-downloaded free app on the U.S. App Store, while Claude ranks seventh and Grok 34th.

Muse’s growth has continued despite privacy concerns. Security researchers found that shared conversations could expose sensitive personal and business information, and Meta has suspended the sharing feature while it investigates, according to the report.

Sensor Tower’s data showed Muse retaining users better than its AI competitors. U.S. Muse users averaged a 30% retention rate after seven days and 23% after 14 days, compared with average rates of 19% and 16% for ChatGPT, Claude and Grok over the same periods, the report said.

Meta also kept spending heavily to promote the app, which accounted for 39% of its U.S. advertising spend so far this month, up from 23% in September, according to Sensor Tower. Muse rose from 73rd to 21st among U.S. brands ranked by advertising impressions.
