Microsoft Announces Xbox Nano, a Smaller Controller for Portable Play
Microsoft unveiled the Xbox Nano, a smaller Xbox controller priced near $50, with Bluetooth and November shipping.
The Xbox Nano is just over five inches long, shorter than most smartphones, and weighs 3.5 ounces, according to Engadget. It keeps the standard Xbox controller layout with all the regular buttons. It supports Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth, allowing connection to Xbox consoles, phones, tablets, and PCs, and Engadget says it also works with iOS and Android devices as well as certain smart TVs.
Unlike most Xbox controllers, the Nano includes a rechargeable battery and does not require AA batteries or a separate charging pack. It also has a programmable Action Button that can be customized through the Xbox Accessories app to take screenshots, capture gameplay, or perform other Xbox shortcuts. The Verge notes that the controller was originally leaked earlier this year with what appeared to be a tiny screen indicating cloud or console connectivity, but that screen is not part of the final shipping model. The rest of the controller matches the leaks, including a USB-C port at the rear and a pairing button.
Engadget reports that Samsung will bundle the controller and two months of Game Pass Ultimate access for new subscribers with select TV purchases in the US during the holiday season. A similar offer is in the works for Meta Quest headsets. The report also notes that Xbox is enabling time limits on cloud gaming starting next month: users will be able to stream cloud games on a TV, Quest, or other device for 15 hours with Game Pass Ultimate unless they buy time credits.
In a hands-on comparison, Engadget's reporter said the Nano reminds them of portable gamepads made by 8BitDo, though it is not as small as that brand's Micro controller. The reporter, who plays games on a phone using BackBone Pro and OhSnap's MCON, said they are interested in testing how the Nano's triggers feel.
Pre-orders are open now. The Verge says the controller will start shipping in November. Engadget says it will ship in the US on Nov. 4, become available in 35 other countries next month, and reach other markets later.
