Microsoft cuts Microsoft 365 Family and Premium OneDrive storage to a shared 2TB
Microsoft is cutting the combined OneDrive storage for Microsoft 365 Family and Premium from 6TB to 2TB. New subscribers face the limit immediately, while existing customers see it after renewals on or after May 2, 2027.
The current Family and Premium plans have allowed subscribers to share their subscription with five additional people. Each of those six people received 1TB of personal OneDrive storage, producing a total of 6TB for the household. Under the change, that sharing arrangement remains in place, but the combined storage available to the group drops to 2TB. Microsoft announced the change quietly in a support post, Android Authority reported.
According to Android Authority, solo subscribers could benefit from the change, while families using more than 2TB may need to delete files, move data, or pay for additional storage. The new policy does not alter the ability to share the subscription with five other people; it only reduces the total storage pool those users can draw from.
The change affects Microsoft 365 Family and Premium, plans that bundle Office apps and Copilot features. Android Authority noted that OneDrive storage had been a major reason some customers considered subscribing, even if they were not drawn by Copilot perks or the bundled Office apps. The effective timing differs by customer type: new subscribers receive the 2TB shared pool immediately, while existing subscribers keep the old allowance until their first renewal on or after May 2, 2027.
Editor's Summary Microsoft is reducing the OneDrive storage included with Microsoft 365 Family and Premium from a 6TB shared household pool to 2TB. The change applies immediately to new subscribers and will reach existing customers after renewals on or after May 2, 2027. Families using more than 2TB must delete files, move data, or buy extra storage, while solo users may see little practical effect.
