Microsoft Expands Copilot Control Over Windows and Local Files

Microsoft says Copilot will gain access to local Windows files and the ability to take actions across the OS.

Jacob Andreou, Microsoft’s executive vice president of Copilot, demonstrated the capabilities on stage with a video showing an AI agent called Autopilot helping with tax filing. Andreou told the agent that he had received an email from his accountant and asked Autopilot to get her what she needed. Autopilot then searched across different folders to find the documents, renamed the files, zipped them into a folder, and drafted an email to send to the accountant with the zip file attached.

Andreou said features powered by Hybrid Intelligence will be coming to Copilot over the “next couple months.”

Microsoft also showed a new Windows search experience that allows users to take quick actions from the search bar. The examples included turning on dark mode, turning up microphone volume with an in-line slider, and sending a text. Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s Windows and Surface boss, said the new experience will be available starting this fall on Windows 11 PCs.
