Microsoft fixes File History bug in Windows 11 preview update, but not for 23H2 or Windows 10

ZDNet reports that Microsoft's September Patch Tuesday update broke File History in current Windows 11 versions and Windows 10. An optional Windows 11 preview update now fixes the backup tool for newer editions, but Windows 11 23H2 and Windows 10 users must wait for a future update.

Microsoft said in its Knowledge Base support pages for the September 8 rollout that some Windows users who installed the update may be unable to create or run backups through File History. Affected users may see a message telling them to reconnect their drive even when a backup drive is connected and working correctly. The timestamp for the last backup might not refresh, and files previously backed up successfully could display an error stating that no previous version is available.

All current versions of Windows 11 are affected, including Windows 11 26H1, 25H2, 24H2 and 23H2, according to ZDNet. Windows 10 is also affected, because people who have registered for Extended Security Updates continue to receive monthly security updates. Users who think they have been hit by the bug can check Windows Event Viewer for application crash events that reference FileHistory.exe or KERNELBASE.dll. To do this, right-click the Start button and select Event Viewer. In the left sidebar, expand Windows Logs and click Application. In the right pane, select Filter Current Log, set the Event level to Error, select Application Error under Event sources and click OK. Results should be checked for any mention of FileHistory.exe or KERNELBASE.dll.

File History has long been a staple of Windows, serving as a way to back up and restore important folders and files, including locations such as Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos and Desktop. Microsoft still technically supports it but treats it as a legacy feature and no longer develops it. Instead, the company pushes users to use OneDrive or the Windows Backup program to back up, sync and recover files.

A new Windows 11 preview update released on Tuesday patches the bug so that File History should start working properly again. The update is optional, so users must install it themselves. In Settings, under Windows Update, users should look for an update named 2026-09 Preview Update followed by a KB number. For Windows 11 26H1, the update is KB5124006. For Windows 11 25H2, the listed update is KB5124010. Users can click the Download and install link to run it. Although preview updates can be buggy, this is the only option for now for people who depend on File History. Otherwise, they can wait until the October Patch Tuesday rollout, which will carry the same fix.

The fix does not apply to Windows 11 23H2 or Windows 10. Microsoft no longer supports version 23H2, while Windows 10 is supported only through ESU updates. Microsoft says it is working on a fix for the issue on those systems, and that fix will be released in a future Windows update.
