Microsoft Outlook and OpenAI ChatGPT Work hit by separate outages on Monday

Microsoft confirmed a multi-hour outage affecting Outlook and Exchange Online, while OpenAI reported problems with ChatGPT Work. Both companies said they were working on fixes.

According to TechCrunch, Microsoft said the issue was affecting Exchange Online, its cloud-hosted platform for business email, calendar, contacts and tasks. In a post on X at 12:43 p.m. ET, Microsoft wrote: "We’ve confirmed that users may experience degraded functionality with various Exchange Online functionalities. We’re reviewing service telemetry and diagnostic data to isolate the source of the issue." The company later said it had identified a problem with an “authentication component” and was testing a remediation strategy with a portion of its infrastructure before deciding whether to roll it out more broadly.

Users reported problems starting around 11:30 a.m. ET on Monday, according to Downdetector, a crowdsourced outage tracking website. By 2 p.m. ET, the site had received more than 5,000 reports about Outlook. Those affected may have seen delays or failures in sending and receiving messages, errors when searching mailboxes, authentication failures and other issues with mailbox operations.

OpenAI said on its status page that ChatGPT Work, its enterprise artificial intelligence agent, had been experiencing elevated errors and latency for roughly three hours. "Users across multiple subscription plans may be unable to start or continue tasks in ChatGPT Work," the company said. "We are continuing work on implementing a mitigation." OpenAI’s ChatGPT account also posted on X: "ChatGPT Work isn't working right now. Sorry about that, we're working on a fix!"

By 2:24 p.m. ET, more than 1,100 users had reported issues with OpenAI’s products on Downdetector. Microsoft's Outlook reports shortly afterward were close to 4,600. Both platforms had seen higher numbers earlier in the day.

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work in July, positioning it as an enterprise agent that competes directly with Anthropic's Claude Cowork. The tool is designed to help staff complete tasks such as creating slides, web apps, sheets, documents and other complex projects.

Microsoft and OpenAI have been long-time partners. Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019, before ChatGPT launched, and later increased its investment to $13 billion. In recent months, however, the two companies have been competing on multiple fronts.
