Microsoft refreshes Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 13 with Snapdragon X2 Plus, adds haptic Surface Mouse

Microsoft says the six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus delivers up to 18 percent better battery efficiency, more than 60 percent faster graphics and up to 95 percent faster local AI inference on its built-in NPU. For Office productivity, the company claims an 18 percent speed increase. The Surface Pro 12-inch Second Edition is rated for up to 13 hours of web browsing, an hour more than before, while the Surface Laptop 13-inch Second Edition reaches up to 18 hours, two hours more. The Surface Pro 12-inch remains a 12-inch tablet with a kickstand, while the Surface Laptop 13-inch is Microsoft's basic notebook design in a 13-inch, 2.7-pound frame.

The displays remain at the same resolutions but gain brightness. The Surface Pro 12-inch uses a 2196 x 1464 LCD at 220 PPI and up to 90Hz; the Surface Laptop 13-inch has a 1920 x 1280 display at 178 PPI and 60Hz. Both move from 400 nits to 500 nits, a 25 percent increase. Ports are unchanged: two USB-C 3.2 ports on both, plus a USB-A 3.2 port and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the laptop. Both support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. Microsoft is bringing back black as a color option alongside platinum silver and violet, and both devices will be sold to commercial customers. The Surface Pro 12-inch will also be available in an optional 5G configuration.

The price increase is steep. Last year, the Surface Pro 12-inch started at $799.99 and the Surface Laptop 13-inch at $899.99. The new models eliminate the 8GB base memory option, starting with 16GB and configurable up to 24GB. Microsoft continues to sell the Surface Pro keyboard separately for $150. Larger 13-inch Surface Pro and 13.8-inch Surface Laptop models are also available with newer Snapdragon X2 chips at higher prices.

Alongside the PCs, Microsoft will launch a $79.99 Surface Mouse on October 13. The second-generation mouse adds haptic feedback and a customizable action button designed primarily for quick access to Copilot, though it can be configured for other shortcuts through the Surface app. It supports Bluetooth 6.0 and can pair with up to three devices, and it comes in black and platinum. Brett Ostrum, corporate vice president of Surface Devices, said the haptic feedback adds a "small, purposeful physical response" to actions such as a click registering, a window snapping into place or an object aligning. The feedback works with clicks, drags and alignment in Windows 11 and in apps including PowerPoint, Affinity, Concepts and Filmora. Microsoft last launched the Surface Mouse in 2016.

Microsoft is also introducing Ink Canvas, which it describes as an AI-powered, pen-first experience for sketching, annotating, generating images and summarizing text directly on the canvas. The app launches with the Surface Pro 12-inch and will be available in the Microsoft Store on October 13 for other Surface devices.

In Japan, TENKU has launched a separate compact Windows 11 Pro convertible, the Note Pro AI. According to TechRadar, citing Hermitage Akihabara, the device uses an Intel Core Ultra 5 125U processor with 12 cores and 14 threads and an integrated NPU, paired with 16GB of LPDDR5 memory and a 512GB M.2 SSD. It weighs 960 grams and has a 10.51-inch IPS touchscreen with a 1920 x 1280 resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio. A 360-degree hinge lets the keyboard fold behind the screen. The touch panel recognizes ten simultaneous inputs, and an optional digital pen supports 4,096 pressure levels.

TENKU rates the Note Pro AI's 3,800mAh battery for 17 hours. The chassis measures 243mm by 177.6mm by 17.5mm. It includes 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.2. TENKU lists the Note Pro AI at about 176,800 yen, or roughly $1,127, including tax. A launch promotion cuts 25 percent from the price through Highbeam's official online store and physical outlets, bringing it to 132,600 yen, or about $845, until September 24, 2026. Amazon Japan is offering a separate 15 percent reduction during the same period.
