Microsoft rolls out Michelangelus font based on Michelangelo's handwriting to Microsoft 365
Microsoft is rolling out Michelangelus, a new Microsoft 365 font inspired by Michelangelo's handwriting for St. Peter's Basilica's 400th consecration anniversary. Some users say it barely resembles the original.
The font was commissioned by the Fabbrica di San Pietro and designed by Italian design agency studiogusto. It is intended for digital and printed materials related to the Basilica as well as signage inside the building, but Microsoft decided to share it with the world through Office.
studiogusto says the idea was not a direct imitation of Michelangelo's handwriting but to "adapt it through design into a modern tool." CEO Mimmo Berterame said: "For him [Michelangelo], [writing] was about clarity and respect for the reader. So, beauty was important, but it also needed order. Our typeface needs character and personality, but it also needs to be clear and easy to read."
According to TechRadar, the result is a modern approximation of his penmanship based on the rules and feel of the writing style. It keeps some of Michelangelo's flourishes, such as dotting the top of the letter "h."
Some reactions have been critical. A Reddit user said the font is "a very loose interpretation of the phrase 'based on.'" Another user quoted the Basilica di San Pietro's official press release, which said the typeface "draws inspiration from Michelangelo Buonarroti's bold, expressive handwriting" but "goes beyond a mere reproduction" and aims to identify a visual logic, proportions, rhythm and harmony to translate into a contemporary typographic system. The original poster replied that the execution does not live up to the intent, and another commenter said the capital letters A and M are "wildly different" and that the font does not feel like handwriting.
Si Daniels, principal product designer for Office Design, said the new font will be rolled out to Microsoft 365 apps at the end of the year. It can be manually downloaded and installed now.
