Microsoft Teams to add third-party deepfake detection and impersonation warnings

Microsoft will add third-party deepfake detection and impersonation warnings to Teams in November 2026, TechRadar reports.

According to Microsoft roadmap entries cited by TechRadar, third-party detection solutions will analyze meeting media for signs of synthetic or manipulated audio and video and send detection signals to Teams, enabling integrated in-meeting experiences and controls. A separate roadmap entry says that when Teams detects a potential impersonation attempt, it will surface warnings and risk indicators to help users recognize suspicious identities.

Both features are scheduled for a November 2026 launch. Microsoft has not yet disclosed finer details, including which third-party platforms will be able to support deepfake detection.

The additions come as Teams has become a target for impersonation attacks. Microsoft reported in July 2026 that weekly malicious Teams voice call attempts had increased nearly tenfold in one year, while voice phishing attempts rose 80 percent. AI has made it easier for criminals to exploit vulnerabilities, according to TechRadar.

Microsoft has also introduced other protections, such as file extension blocking. The company said it reduced phishing activity related to Tycoon2FA, a major phishing-as-a-service platform, by 92 percent in a year. Its roadmap includes additional Teams announcements, divided between new features and further security updates.

Microsoft's plan to add third-party deepfake detection to Teams is intended to give meeting participants more tools to judge whether the person they are speaking with is genuine. The impersonation warnings are designed to flag suspicious identities during meetings. The third-party detection element means external security providers, rather than Teams alone, will analyze meeting media for synthetic or manipulated content, although Microsoft has not named those providers.

TechRadar reported that the two features are slated for November 2026. The timing places the updates after a period of rising voice phishing on Teams. Microsoft has separately pointed to progress against Tycoon2FA and has continued to add security controls to the platform.
