Microsoft to Detail Surface Laptop Ultra and Nvidia RTX Spark at San Francisco Event

Microsoft will hold a Windows and Surface event in San Francisco on October 7, with CEO Satya Nadella, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Pavan Davuluri expected to detail the Surface Laptop Ultra, Nvidia RTX Spark and local AI for Windows.

The speakers include Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Windows and Devices chief Pavan Davuluri and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Microsoft's invitation teased the latest innovations across Windows, Nvidia RTX Spark, Surface and the broader PC ecosystem. Engadget reported that this is Microsoft's first laptop-centric event in two years, and that the company is placing AI at the center after negative reactions led it to scale back Copilot's presence in the operating system.

The Surface Laptop Ultra was first shown earlier this year at Microsoft's Build developer conference. According to Engadget, it is intended to be the most powerful Surface yet, with a 15-inch mini LED display that reaches up to 2,000 nits, the largest trackpad Microsoft has made, and USB-C, USB-A and a full-sized SD card reader. Microsoft has not announced pricing, release dates or full specifications. The Verge reported rumors that Microsoft will release multiple configurations, including 18-core and 20-core CPU variants and memory options up to 128GB.

The laptop runs on Nvidia's RTX Spark platform, which uses Nvidia's new Arm-based chips. Nvidia claims the RTX Spark delivers 1 petaflop of AI computing power, according to Engadget. Huang's appearance is expected to bring more details about the platform, and The Verge reported that other PC makers are also preparing RTX Spark-powered laptops.

Microsoft is also expected to discuss AI agents that run locally on Windows. The Verge reported that Microsoft has been laying the groundwork for Windows AI agents for nearly a year, and the Surface Laptop Ultra is positioned to accelerate those agents through the RTX Spark chip. The company may also provide updates on Windows 11 improvements, including performance on 8GB RAM devices and new features for developers and creatives, according to The Verge.

A new version of Windows appears unlikely. Microsoft has said a new operating system would not be released in 2026, and its recent work has focused on Windows 11 changes such as visual adjustments, Start menu fixes, a better File Explorer and large-scale AI integration, Engadget reported. Engadget also noted that the Surface Laptop Ultra and RTX Spark are designed for Windows 11, making a new OS launch immediately before the laptop less plausible.

Microsoft's recent AI efforts have had mixed results. Engadget reported that the Copilot+ PC initiative rose and fell into obscurity, and that the company's rollout of AI features in Windows has been troubled. Today's event is expected to clarify pricing, availability and software features for the Surface Laptop Ultra, as well as Microsoft's broader local AI strategy. Both Engadget and The Verge said they will live-blog the presentation and publish hands-on impressions and analysis.
