Microsoft to retire Calendar, People and Files companion apps in December 2026

Microsoft will retire Calendar, People and Files apps in December 2026, with data staying in other M365 services.

The apps were intended to give users quick access to important information such as contact details. The data behind them is not going away, however. Contact details and similar information are already stored elsewhere in the Microsoft 365 cloud, so the companion apps were only one way to reach that information. Microsoft had also been building Copilot into the apps, and TechRadar reported that some Copilot features were still listed as 'coming soon' before the retirement was confirmed.

The companion apps are no longer being installed automatically, but they are not set to be removed automatically either. For enterprises, administrators will need to remove them, and admins also need to configure Intune to stop deployments. Unmanaged PCs, such as consumer laptops, can remove the apps through the usual channel.

Users who actually relied on the companion apps are being told to use other Microsoft services. Outlook and Teams are the recommended options for calendar and people information, while files can be accessed through Windows Search Box, File Explorer, SharePoint and OneDrive. Microsoft also pointed users to its Copilot AI companion as a way to surface information.

With deprecation only weeks away, Microsoft stressed that important security updates for the three apps will not be rolled out. The retirement affects the app interfaces, not the underlying data, which remains available through the other Microsoft 365 and Windows services cited by the company.
