Musk's SpaceX Foundry to Cast Gas Turbine Blades Could Speed AI Power, but Pollution Concerns Linger
Elon Musk confirmed SpaceX is building a foundry in Texas to cast gas turbine blades, aiming to accelerate natural gas power for AI data centers by up to 18 months, while raising pollution worries.
Musk wrote on X that both SpaceX and Tesla are building 100 gigawatts per year of solar production capacity, but natural gas will still be needed to supplement and bootstrap solar for several years. He said the limiting factor for natural gas turbine production is casting the blades and vanes, and that by doing in-house casting at SpaceX, the company can accelerate turbines coming online by up to 18 months, which he called a profound game-changer.
The move addresses a growing constraint for the AI industry. While GPU shortages persist, with Nvidia's Blackwell chips still facing lead times of several months, the physical power grid has emerged as a second bottleneck. The International Energy Agency projects global data center electricity use will roughly double by 2030, and gas turbine maker GE Vernova says it is essentially sold out of production capacity through 2030, largely due to AI infrastructure demand.
That shortage has pushed hyperscalers, including Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI and Microsoft, to build private gas-fired power plants next to data centers instead of waiting on the grid. After years of prioritizing wind and solar, these companies are now betting on natural gas to get data centers online faster.
The casting bottleneck is severe. According to The Information, blades inside a gas turbine's hottest section run at temperatures around 3,000 to 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit, roughly 800 degrees hotter than the melting point of the metal alloy they are made from. The blades rely on internal cooling channels and thermal-barrier coatings, and each blade must be cast as a single, unbroken crystal, grown slowly inside a vacuum furnace without microscopic seams. Only four companies worldwide have mastered the process at industrial scale, and all are at capacity.
Producing these blades is difficult even for jet engines; power-plant turbine blades are considerably larger, making defect-free production even harder. If SpaceX succeeds, it would give a Musk-controlled entity a manufacturing capability that every other AI infrastructure builder currently depends on a tiny oligopoly for, offering SpaceXAI an edge that well-funded competitors without manufacturing expertise would find hard to quickly copy.
But the push for more gas turbines also carries environmental costs. In Memphis, where SpaceXAI has run gas turbines to power its Colossus data centers since 2024, the NAACP has repeatedly accused the company of operating without required permits or pollution controls. The turbines emit smog-forming compounds and hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde, pollutants linked to asthma, respiratory disease and certain cancers. The site is near neighborhoods already facing heavy industrial pollution, and University of Memphis researchers said their limited analysis found air pollution grew slightly worse because of the data center.
In Virginia's "Data Center Alley," a study commissioned by the Piedmont Environmental Council, using the EPA's COBRA health-impact model, found that emissions from a single facility's eight full-time gas turbines could reach more than 2.5 million people across multiple counties, with the heaviest impact on marginalized communities. The study estimated 3.4 to 6.5 additional premature deaths per year and $53 million to $99 million in annual health-related damages.
