Mystery AI Model Ox Alpha Sparks Speculation
A mysterious AI model, Ox Alpha, released on OpenRouter, has sparked speculation about its maker, with theories ranging from Chinese labs to Microsoft.
The free model is described on OpenRouter as "a reasoning model designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workload." Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, whose company is acquiring OpenRouter, wrote on X that Ox Alpha is "very impressive."
The OpenRouter listing labels Ox Alpha a "stealth model" developed and operated by a third-party provider who has chosen to remain anonymous during the preview, TechCrunch reported.
Speculation has largely centered on China. AI analyst Andrew Curran said on Friday that initial speculation pointed to GLM models by Chinese company Z.ai, but "this morning people seem less sure of anything." A Wccftech article first suggested GLM as the likely source but later updated to say Ox Alpha could be an unreleased version of Microsoft's MAI. On Reddit, opinions are split, with one post declaring it "can't be the Chinese" and another expressing "high confidence" that it is indeed Chinese.
Despite the swirling theories, the true developer of Ox Alpha remains unknown, and the anonymous preview has left the AI community guessing.
