Nacon unveils Revolution 5 Unlimited, a licensed PS5 controller with built-in control screen
Nacon's Revolution 5 Unlimited is an officially licensed PS5 controller with a built-in control screen. It is available for preorder at $229.99 and is expected to ship later this year.
The built-in screen is designed to let players adjust settings without leaving a game. TechRadar reported that audio mixing, joystick sensitivity and shortcut mapping can be changed on the fly. The Verge reported that the screen can also mix audio from multiple sources, allowing a player using wired headphones connected to the controller to listen to music from a phone and game audio at the same time.
Nacon says the R5U introduces TMR, or tunneling magnetoresistance, magnetic technology to its hardware lineup. The controller uses an asymmetrical stick layout with two drift-resistant TMR thumbsticks, according to The Verge, and both sticks can be customized with alternate heads. Its D-pad is swappable between a classic four-way design and an eight-way option intended to make combo moves easier in fighting games. The Verge also reported that 10, 14 and 16 gram weights can be inserted into the controller's non-slip grips to adjust its balance.
For competitive play, the R5U offers micro-switch action buttons, Trigger Blockers with "instant trigger" technology that switches from an analog pull to an ultra-short click, and multiple remappable shortcut buttons, TechRadar reported. The Verge reported that the top of the controller has two shoulder buttons, two customizable shortcut buttons and two triggers with adjustable travel. There are four additional customizable shortcut buttons on the back as well as a button for switching between saved profiles.
Nacon says a "Shooter Pro Mode" removes joystick dead zones for enhanced responsiveness, precision and performance. The controller supports PS5, PC and Android Smart TVs, and a dedicated mobile app for iOS and Android expands customization to response curves, EQ profiles for audio sources and the color of RGB lighting around the right stick. TechRadar reported that a dedicated PC mode for ultra-low 1ms latency and advanced features will also be available in the mobile app. The package includes a storage case and a dedicated charging dock, and Nacon says the R5U is its first officially licensed PS5 controller, allowing users to charge and connect it in one place.
Yannick Allaert, director of Nacon's accessories division, said: "With the Revolution 5 Unlimited, Nacon demonstrates its ability to set new standards in the competitive gaming peripherals segment. By combining a built-in control screen and TMR technology on an officially licensed PlayStation asymmetric controller, we are giving competitive and demanding players a state-of-the-art instrument, backed by years of expertise within the Group."
TechRadar Gaming previously reviewed Nacon's Revolution 5 Pro controller, with reviewer Rhys Wood calling it a "fantastic controller that falls just short of being essential."
