Netflix 4K on Chrome: Requirements and How to Check Your Stream

Netflix 4K in Chrome on Windows requires Premium plan, compatible display, HEVC codec, and specific hardware. Here's how to check your stream.

The most basic requirement is a Netflix Premium subscription, as 4K is not available on Standard or ad-supported plans. Even with that, your display must have a native resolution of 4K (3840 × 2160) or higher. Most monitors are 1080p or 1440p, so they won't benefit from 4K streaming. Additionally, both the monitor and the video output port on your computer must support HDCP 2.2, a copy-protection protocol designed to prevent unauthorized capture of 4K content. This applies whether you're using a built-in laptop screen or an external monitor or TV.

Your operating system also needs to support the HEVC video codec. Macs have native HEVC support, but Windows users may need to purchase the HEVC Video Extensions package from the Microsoft Store to play Netflix 4K content in Chrome. While Netflix is gradually transitioning to the more efficient AV1 codec, HEVC remains a key requirement for 4K streaming.

Hardware requirements are equally specific. According to Netflix, 4K playback requires an Nvidia GeForce 1050 GPU or newer, or an AMD Radeon RX 400 GPU or newer. The CPU must be at least a 7th-generation Intel Core processor or an AMD Ryzen chip. Windows users must be running Windows 11, and all drivers and software should be up to date.

For Chromebook Plus or Chromebox devices, the requirements are slightly different but still strict. You still need a Premium plan and a 4K display with HDCP 2.2 support, plus Chrome OS 76 or later with Google Chrome installed.

If you've met all these requirements and still suspect your stream isn't 4K, you can check the actual resolution by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D while a video plays. This displays a diagnostic overlay with your current bitrate and resolution. If it shows anything less than 3840 × 2160, you're not getting 4K. You can also verify your playback settings by going to Account, selecting Manage Profiles, and ensuring Data Usage is set to High or Best Video.
