Netflix to Launch The Conjuring: Unspoken Game on Oct. 13
Netflix has announced The Conjuring: Unspoken, a horror game set in The Conjuring universe, will launch exclusively on its service on October 13 with a phone as controller.
The game is an interactive paranormal investigation that players can play from their couch. It is a narrative experience, and players shape the story by choosing different dialogue options. As demonologist Francesca Noakes, players search the historic Red Lion Inn, reported to be a haunted place in England, for clues about things that go bump in the night.
Players use a phone to control an electromagnetic field reader, an infrared camera and a spirit box. The big screen shows the virtual environment, while the phone in the player's hand serves as the controller for those tools. The infrared camera, for instance, lets players see a thermal overlay while looking for cold spots that indicate an otherworldly presence.
Netflix says players need to have seen the Conjuring movies to play the game, but adds that a few familiar faces pop up and that knowing the backstory adds to the overall impact.
The Conjuring: Unspoken was developed by Supermassive Games, known for narrative horror games such as The Quarry and Until Dawn. The studio announced in August that it planned to lay off up to 75 staffers, and Supermassive's former IT and facilities director said on LinkedIn that more than 70 people would be leaving the studio.
The new game follows the June launch of another horror title, Unhinged. That game was developed by Night School, the studio behind Oxenfree, but Netflix shut down the studio in August.
