NHTSA Reviews Reports of Tesla Robotaxis Speeding in School Zones

NHTSA is evaluating a petition that alleges Tesla robotaxis with the Automated Driving System exceeded speed limits in active school zones, adding to scrutiny of Tesla and Waymo automated vehicles.

NHTSA said the Office of Defects Investigation received a defect petition, or DP, on that date. The petitioner alleges that the Automated Driving System exceeds posted speed limits in active school zones, according to the agency statement cited by The Verge. The request covers Model Y and Cybercab vehicles from model year 2026 when the system is engaged.

The inquiry adds to federal scrutiny of Tesla's automated driving features. The Cybercab launched earlier this year and is already under investigation for lacking side mirrors, pedals, and a steering wheel. NHTSA has also opened an investigation into Tesla's Full Self-Driving system over traffic violations, including running red lights and driving on the wrong side of the street.

Waymo's robotaxis have faced similar inquiries. Those inquiries include allegations of illegally passing school buses and hitting a child near a California elementary school, The Verge reported.
