Nikon Z5 IIC Drops the Viewfinder and the Price to $1,400

Nikon's 24-megapixel Z5 IIC removes the Z5 II's electronic viewfinder, cutting weight to 537 grams and the body price to $1,400. It keeps internal RAW video, a flip-out touchscreen and 7.5-stop stabilization.

Nikon says the "C" in the name stands for compact. The Z5 IIC weighs 537 grams, about 25 percent less than the 700-gram Z5 II, while keeping a full-size grip and most of the manual controls; the joystick and a few other buttons found on the Z5 II are gone. The rear screen is a 3.2-inch, 1,040K-dot touch display that fully articulates, and the camera comes in a silver-and-black finish.

For video, the Z5 IIC records 4K at 30 frames per second supersampled from the full 6K sensor width, 4K at 60 fps with a 1.5x crop, and 1080p at 120 fps. It can capture internally in Nikon's N-RAW format with N-Log, and H.265 is also supported. Autofocus matches the Z5 II and detects humans, animals, birds and vehicles, plus fish, a subject type Nikon now includes. In-body stabilization is rated at 7.5 stops of shake reduction.

Creator-oriented features include 15 scene modes covering portraits, pets, food, night landscapes and twilight; a REC lamp on the front of the camera; a product review mode that shifts focus between a presenter and an object; imaging recipes, some supplied by the cinema camera maker RED; and a waveform display, focus peaking and zebras. The camera has one SD UHS-II card slot rather than the Z5 II's two.

Stills shooters get 14 fps bursts with continuous autofocus in RAW and JPEG, or 30 fps in JPEG only with the electronic shutter, along with the same subject-detection options available for video. The expanded ISO range reaches 64,000.

The Z5 IIC is available for preorder at $1,400 body-only or $1,700 with the Z 24-50mm f/4.3-5.3 kit lens. Engadget described the pricing as a bargain for a full-frame camera with in-body stabilization and internal RAW video, and noted it arrives during a period of steep inflation across the camera market.
