Nintendo's free Switch 2 update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe adds eight-player split-screen and CameraPlay support.

The game began as Mario Kart 8 on Wii U in 2014 and arrived on Switch in 2017 as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with additional tracks and features. It stayed near the top of U.S. sales charts for nearly the whole Switch life span. Switch 2 launched last year with Mario Kart World, which appeared to mark the end for its predecessor, but the update arrives unexpectedly, according to Engadget.

With the update, local matches support up to eight players in split-screen if enough controllers are available, and original Switch controllers work. CameraPlay support permits players to see each other's faces when a Switch 2 camera or a compatible USB-C camera is connected. CameraPlay also works online via GameChat, as it does in Mario Kart World.

Nintendo also trimmed loading times and added "enhanced visuals" for docked play, assuming a 4K TV that can use the Switch 2's improved output. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe already output at 1080p in handheld mode through Handheld Mode Boost, and may now do so natively.

Engadget notes that Nintendo's motive for enriching an older title rather than steering players to Mario Kart World is unclear. The company has been steadily updating Mario Kart World, but many have hoped for news of downloadable content for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe given how many new courses it received over the years. Mario Kart World remains part of a revamped Switch 2 bundle that costs $50 more than at launch and now adds a three-month Nintendo Switch Online membership.
