Nintendo Direct unveils Metroid Ravenous and Switch 2 slate into 2027

Nintendo's September 9 Direct revealed Metroid Ravenous, Monster Hunter Wilds and Final Fantasy VII Revelation for Switch 2.

The Tuesday Zelda showcase included footage and a November 5 release date for the Switch 2 remake of Ocarina of Time and news of a Zelda-themed Nintendo Switch 2, according to The Verge. Wednesday's Direct opened with a Switch 2 port of Monster Hunter Wilds, due December 4 and including all updates, with the Ascendance expansion set for 2027. Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third part of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, was confirmed for Switch 2 on April 8, 2027, the same day it launches on other platforms, with pre-orders opening later that day. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion launched on Switch 2 the same day as the Direct.

Metroid Ravenous is the next 2D entry after Metroid Dread. Nintendo's trailer showed Samus narrating that she was ambushed by mysterious assailants and thrown deep underground, trying to return to the surface. The game keeps 2D play but uses 3D graphics, cinematic action, parrying and Morph Ball movement; Nintendo's marketing uses the line 'eat or be eaten,' and Samus appears able to absorb energy from enemies. It is due just over a year after Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which Engadget described as divisive.

Capcom's Resident Evil remakes also headed to Switch 2. Engadget reported that Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition will arrive on October 16, with RE4 including the Separate Ways expansion. The releases come ahead of Resident Evil: Veronica, a remake of Code: Veronica planned for next year. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Definitive Edition was dated for February 25, with upgraded visuals, enhanced framerates, more on-screen enemies, all DLC and a new tougher difficulty mode; owners of the Switch version will not get a free upgrade but will receive a discount and can transfer save data. The original was a 2020 Switch hack-and-slash Zelda spinoff set a century before Breath of the Wild.

Several games became available immediately. Meccha Chameleon, the multiplayer hide-and-seek hit that sold more than 20 million copies within about two months of its June debut on Steam, arrived on Switch 2 that day. Star Fox Adventures, originally a GameCube title, joined Nintendo Switch Online the same day. Torneko's Mystery Dungeon Classic HD was also available later that day, according to TechRadar. A demo for Cairn was released, with the full port due in early 2027.

Nintendo dated and detailed other Switch 2 titles. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered will arrive on September 29, with mouse and motion controls, gyro aiming and touchscreen support, and will be free for owners of the original Switch game; the Songs of the Past expansion is coming in 2027. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Royal Edition, which includes all the action RPG's DLC, is due on Switch 2 in 2027. Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will arrive on Switch and Switch 2 on December 10 and is said to have the biggest collection of puzzles in the series, with solving one revealing more story. The same developer, Level 5, also has Yo-kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain in development. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave was still set for September 17, and Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight was confirmed for Switch 2 on September 18.

Pikmin 4's Switch 2 version adds voice commands through the console's built-in microphone and a new Dandori Academy mode, with three difficulty levels, weekly trials that can be attempted once and score comparisons with friends and other players. Engadget said the Switch 2 version arrives November 12; TechRadar listed it as out today, a discrepancy in the two accounts. The Switch 2 version has an upgrade option for existing owners.

A new horror game from Bloober Team also appeared. Engadget identified it as Onyx: The Dark Grip, while TechRadar called it Onyx: The Dead Grip. The Switch 2 exclusive is due next year and is playable only in handheld mode, with touchscreen controls for interacting with the environment and reading other characters' minds, and tilting the console to fend off certain threats.

Mario Kart World received a free update beginning September 9. It adds ten courses pulled from the SNES original, including Choco Island, Mario Circuit and Ghost Valley, available in Versus mode, according to Engadget. The courses had existed in the open game world but previously offered only exploration rewards and timed P-Switch missions; they now function as race tracks. The update also adds two new routes to Knockout Tour and changes question blocks so they sit flat on the ground, as in the original Super Mario Kart. Version 1.8.0 was set to be downloadable later that day. Separately, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe received a free Switch 2 update adding eight-player split-screen and slightly better graphics, Engadget reported.

Other announcements in TechRadar's rundown included a free Star Fox update on September 29 with four-player split-screen Battle Mode and three new stages; a Pokemon Pokopia expansion adding accessories later this year; a new Yo-kai Watch game, Yo-kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain, in development; Stage Fright from the Overcooked developers for Switch and Switch 2 next year; Disney Dreamlight Valley: The Keepsake Sea, a paid expansion with underwater areas; and Ondeh Ondeh Kaya's Tasty Tale, a rhythm adventure for 2027. Kirby Air Riders amiibo will launch November 12. Mega Man: Dual Override showed Proto Man and new Mega Man and Proto Man amiibo. Eternal Anima is an RPG coming to Switch 2 on March 4, 2027. Danganronpa 2x2 will arrive January 14, 2027, with a new Slayhem mode. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is coming in October, and Metal Slug Ultimate Collection is due next year. Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force GX and Romance Saga 3: Destinies United are both set for February 16, 2027. Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis is dated February 12, 2027, and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, a Switch 2 exclusive, is set for October 22.
