Nintendo to hold Zelda anniversary Direct and general Switch 2 Direct next week

Nintendo announced two Direct events next week: a Zelda 40th-anniversary stream on Sept. 8 and a regular Switch 2 Direct on Sept. 9, with a Treehouse livestream to follow.

The Zelda stream is set to run roughly 30 minutes. According to The Verge, it will stream live on Nintendo’s YouTube channel and the Nintendo Today app. Nintendo is advertising it as a celebration of the franchise’s 40th birthday, but Engadget notes it will likely devote much time to the Ocarina of Time remake announced in June. The Verge also cited leaked images of a special-edition Zelda-themed Switch 2 console and controller, and said the live-action Zelda movie is expected in theaters next year.

The Sept. 9 Direct is expected to last 45 minutes and focus on Switch 2 games launching this winter. It will be followed by a Nintendo Treehouse gameplay livestream. Engadget says the Treehouse event is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. ET and will run two hours.

Other titles that could get new footage, according to Engadget, include Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, due Sept. 17, and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, scheduled for Oct. 22. The Verge added that the Direct usually includes a preview of upcoming Nintendo Classics library additions, but no specific games have been announced.

The Verge noted that the Switch 2 now costs $50 more, and asked which upcoming games might justify the higher price. Engadget pointed out that no mainline Mario, Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros., or Pikmin titles have been revealed for the console, leaving room for surprises during the 45-minute showcase.
