Nolla Health Launches AI Acne Prescriptions in Utah

Nolla Health launched a Utah pilot for AI-generated acne prescriptions, using facial scans with phased physician oversight.

The service costs $4.99 per month and is limited to Utah residents who are 18 or older and have mild-to-moderate acne. Nolla Health says its AI can currently prescribe eight different skin treatments, according to Bloomberg. If the AI system cannot confidently select a treatment, the company says it will direct users to a physician.

The pilot launches with gradually loosening physician oversight. Two physicians will approve each AI-generated prescription before it is issued for the first 100 patients. For up to 500 patients, physicians will start reviewing prescriptions only after they are prescribed. After that, Nolla Health says physicians will review a sample of at least 10 percent of prescriptions every month, plus every case involving an escalation or side effect.

Nolla Health describes the pilot as a complement to physicians, not a replacement. The company says that by handling routine, low-acuity cases, Nolla Derm frees dermatologists to focus on complex, high-risk patients.

Several other healthcare companies are experimenting with AI-generated prescriptions in Utah, which started allowing AI systems to renew certain medications earlier this year. Nolla Health says its service differs because it issues initial prescriptions rather than renewals.
